Second, fossils formed very quickly, before the animal or plant completely decayed or was scavenged. This means that fossils formed through catastrophic circumstances. Most fossils can be attributed to the worldwide catastrophe of Noah’s Flood, in which countless creatures were killed and then rapidly buried, or to its residual effects. Some are big national parks, where digs and fossil discovery are just a fraction of everything offered. Others are full-blown fossil sites, complete with museums, complete skeletons, and even some. Fossil-Bearing Rocks Fossils are most commonly found in sedimentary rocks formed by the accumulation (deposition) of distinct particles or sediments in layers. Sediments may be transformed into rock (lithified) either by compaction or by cementing the grains together. Some of the major types of sedimentary rocks which may contain fossils.

Often a small detail is all that seperates one species from another. Still overall classification system is not so difficult to understand. Fossils of animals are classified, as are living specimens, by observing the body structures and functions.

Index fossils (also known as guide fossils or indicator fossils) are fossils used to define and identify geologic periods (or faunal stages).

Index fossils must have a short vertical range, wide geographic distribution and rapid evolutionary trends. Another term, Zone fossil is used when the fossil have all the characters stated above except wide geographical distribution, they are.

The very first reference book I purchased, because I live in Virginia, was Fossil Sharks of the Chesapeake Bay Region by Bretton W. Kent. It was written about fossil shark teeth found in a particular stratigraphy local to the Chesapeake Bay, but because of the overlap in the fossil time line, it can be applied to several areas.

Many of the sites are closed to collecting or buried under shopping centers, highways, or housing developments. Closed sites will stay on the list, as they are sometimes reopened, and sometimes the same rocks and fossils will turn up yards or miles down the road. Plus, the track site, named for being an area where footprints and fossils are preserved, includes managers of the excavation sites to help beginning visitors identify dinosaur tracks in the sand.

The area has yielded fossil remains of feathered dinosaurs, prehistoric birds, early mammals, pterosaurs and crocodile-like choristoderan reptiles. In fact, the formation is so rich in palaeo-biodiversity, that it has even given rise to the term Jehol Biota, a group that includes all the organisms, including the many endemic ones, that lived.
