He was also the leading authority on Byzantine music, writing the standard book on the subject during the war years when he was unable to compose. He established himself also as a musicologist, taking up a position at Lincoln College, Oxford, where he would remain as a Fellow for the rest of his life.

EGON WELLESZ ( - ) Born in Vienna, the composer, musicologist and Byzantinist Egon Wellesz won early academic distinction, teaching music history at the New Vienna Conservatory and writing the first book on Schoenberg, with whom he had studied privately.   Essays on Opera – Egon Wellesz ‘I think it is a mistake to underrate the social strength of opera.
